"As a child in school, I struggled with academics. Whether it was math, English, or science, I would try so hard to focus and absorb the lessons, but no matter how much effort I put in, it just wouldn’t stick. I’d often find my mind wandering, thinking about anything and everything except the work in front of me. (I can imagine my teachers reading this now and having a little chuckle to themselves).
I vividly remember my dad sitting with me to help with homework. He was so patient, but more often than not, he’d end up doing most of it because hours would go by with little progress. I also recall him trying to get me to read a book - after just a few sentences, my mind would drift off somewhere else. To this day, I don’t think I’ve ever fully finished reading a book—not because I don’t want to, but because I simply can’t. I’d love nothing more than to sit down in the evening with a good book, but it’s just not something that comes naturally to me. Even filling out online forms takes me three times as long as most people I know.
However, where I truly excelled was anything practical, especially sports. Whatever the sport, I was on the team and was one of the most capable players, which I took great pride in. I was good at something, and it made me feel confident!
Looking back, if anyone had taken a step back and thought about teaching me through sports or animals, I might have been at the top of the class.
I’m now 29 I run a small but successful business with horses, I’ve bought my own house and now I’m able to help others via Jess’s horse haven.
A message to 12 year old Jess would be ..
not everyone learns the same way - and that’s okay. It’s not about what’s right or wrong; it’s about finding what works for you."
